NATURE HIGHLIGHTS COSTA RICA

  • Total distance from Juan Santamaria International Airport to San Jose: 17 km / 10.5 miles. Approximate driving time: 40 minutes.

  • Early morning, meet Pachira s lodge staff and join group to reach Tortuguero first by bus and then by boat.  Breakfast on route.  Arrive around noon.  Afternoon visits to the village. Note: daily activities may vary.

Total distance from San Jose to Tortuguero: 130 km / 81 miles. Approximate driving time: 4:00 hours.

  • Tortuguero National Park is a wilderness area with extraordinary biological variety. Diverse mammals, birds and fish live in eleven different defined habitats. Strong Caribbean currents have provided a straight 22 mile expanse of beach which is a favored nesting ground for sea turtles like the Hawksbill and loggerheads that nest from July through October. The Leatherback, the largest sea turtle of the world, nests from February to July. Most exploring of the park is done by boat. Guides with an amazingly trained eye astound visitors finding wildlife in veiled corners, pointing at mischievous monkeys, and sharing fascinating facts about nature.

  • Total distance from San José to Savegre: 89 km / 55 miles. Approximate driving time: 3 hours.

Beautiful mountains, in the heart of the country give way to the Savegre River, considered one of the cleanest in the country. Exotic flora and fauna, protected areas and national parks are some of the elements that describe this gorgeous zone, a favorite spot for bird watchers and those interested in getting a peek into rural country living. The highlands and valleys are excellent lands to produce fruits. Boutique hotels and lodges, charming little shops and restaurants offer a true Costa Rican experience.

  • Bird watching is one of the fastest growing pastimes with more and more enthusiasts around the world. At Hotel Savegre, you arrive at a place that can offer superlative birding, so much so that San Gerardo de Dota is the only destination in Costa Rica mentioned in the book: Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die: Experts Share the World’s Greatest Destinations. Morning birdsong heralds the start of an unforgettable experience in the cloud forest. During breakfast the hummingbirds give you an indication of what your excursion will be like. After meeting your guide at the hotel reception, you set out on your walk. Our bird list has more than 170 species and some are endemic to the zone. Along our trails, you will be able to find the most elusive and hard-to-spot species, real trophies for birders who want to increase their life list. The tour consists of short walks around the hotel or in our private reserve. Mornings, just after dawn, are the best time for seeing most species.

  • Total, distance from San Gerardo de Dota to Sierpe: 166 km / 103.14 miles. Approximate driving time: 3 hrs 20 min.

Would you like to escape to a place of wild mountain forests that spill down onto pristine beaches? Going down the south Pacific, a bit more off the beaten path than most places in Costa Rica, here you will find incredible biodiversity. Exotic rainforest lodges among striking surroundings, plus outstanding activities like rainforest hikes through Corcovado National Park, snorkeling off Caño Island, or yoga retreats at some remote lodge. This is the way to go if you are dreaming of a vacation to relax, disconnect and renew.

  • This rainforest excursion is an unparalleled opportunity to explore the dense primary rainforest adjacent to San Pedrillo, Corcovado National Park’s northernmost ranger station. From the hotel, you’ll take a 25-minute boat ride along the west coast of the Osa. After the wet landing at the station (our boats go in stern first and drop you a few feet from the beach), you’ll begin your rainforest journey. During the morning hike, your Greentique Certified guide will point out many of the diverse species along the trail You may see white-faced, spider and howler monkeys, white-lipped peccaries, scarlet macaws, coati, and countless other birds and insects. The trails are clearly marked and easy to navigate, ascending and descending through the primary rainforest. After the morning hike and a break for lunch, you will have the opportunity to hike to a beautiful waterfall. Along the way to the falls, you will have another chance for your guide to point out more of the biodiverse flora and fauna. The waterfalls offer the perfect opportunity to relax, take a refreshing swim in the cool fresh water, and take some magnificent pictures of this beautiful area. After some time at the falls, you will return to the ranger station to catch the boat back to the hotel, and on the way, if you’re lucky, you may have the chance to see humpback whales or dolphins breaching and spinning in the ocean.

  • Snorkel the clear waters of Caño Island Biological Reserve, an Eden of coral and rock formations, filled with schools of vibrant tropical fish. Our dive masters take snorkelers of all ages and experience levels aboard our 30-foot Island Hopper for some breathtaking adventures in these beautiful waters. Visibility is 30 – 100 feet or more year-round, and the reefs and rocks formations are teeming with exotic sea life. Caño Island is an underwater photographer’s dream and great for families
