With the dawn, we embark on an early birdwatching expedition, hoping to catch sight of Brown Capuchin or Woolly monkeys amidst the nearby foliage. Alternatively, a serene nature walk along a nearby trail awaits those seeking a quieter morning. After breakfast, our journey resumes, transitioning from towering mountains to gentle hills and pastoral landscapes. A visit to a legitimate coca plantation at Patria offers insight into Peru's coca leaf market. By midday, we arrive at Atalaya, a small port where the Piñipiñi River converges with the Alto Madre de Dios, marking the beginning of our venture into the lowland rainforest. Navigating the river's meandering path in spacious dugout canoes, shaded by canopy roofs, we're greeted by a symphony of avian life and vibrant foliage adorning the forested slopes. Heading northward along the chocolate-brown waters of the Manu River, we enter the pristine realm of lower Manu National Park. As twilight descends, the forest awakens with a chorus of tinamous and cicadas, serenading our arrival at Romero Lodge. In the morning, we continue our trip to the Manu Park Wildlife Center, as our boat driver steers skillfully through shallows and driftwood snags. Orinoco Geese and Horned Screamers strut on the beaches, Capped and White-necked Herons patrol the shoreline, and countless sunbathing turtles dive off their log perches as we approach. After some four hours on the river, we reach the Manu Park Wildlife Center a simple but comfortable low-impact lodge nestled almost invisibly in the forest. Our day begins with an exploration of two nearby lakes, guided by park authorities who determine our visit time to Cocha Salvador. Depending on this schedule, we'll venture to Cocha Otorongo earlier or later in the day. Journeying downstream from our camp, a brief river excursion en route to Cocha Otorongo offers thrilling wildlife encounters. The sight of Capybaras along the riverbank or a solitary Jaguar stealthily retreating into the forest fills us with anticipation. As we trek towards the lake, the canopy overhead teems with the park's diverse monkey species, while towering trees like kapok and ironwood awe us with their colossal trunks and buttressed roots. These oxbow lakes, remnants of the river's meandering course, harbor rich biodiversity, including caimans and the endangered Giant Otter. Cocha Otorongo, under maximum protection, boasts a dock platform and a 50ft tower for wildlife observation, promising sightings of monkeys, kingfishers, and the elusive otters. Cruising Cocha Salvador on a floating catamaran platform, we're treated to panoramic views of the forest and its inhabitants. Monkeys frolic in the trees, macaws paint the sky, and caimans lurk beneath the water's surface, offering a glimpse into the intricacies of Amazonian life. Amidst this serene setting, we may spot the shy Giant Otters, social creatures engaging in playful antics or enjoying a meal on fallen tree trunks. At the break of dawn, we embark on a downstream journey, the prime time for wildlife sightings. Arriving at Limonal park station, we file our wildlife report before departing the park. Navigating the tumultuous convergence of the Alto Madre de Dios and Manu rivers, we approach Boca Manu village. Ninety minutes further downstream brings us to our thrilling final destination, Manu Wildlife Center, just in time for lunch. Following a satisfying meal, we venture into the forest, where the Macaw Lick project awaits. Positioned in a hide with individual chairs and ample space for cameras, we witness the majestic scarlet Macaws descending to feed. Continuing our exploration, we traverse the network of trails surrounding the lodge, culminating in a visit to the 34m/112ft Canopy Tower. From its lofty platform, we observe the vibrant twilight activity of the rainforest canopy. Our journey then leads us along the "collpa trail" to the renowned Tapir Clay lick. Here, amid the most active tapir lick in the Amazon, we encounter these shy giants indulging in a unique clay-eating ritual. Equipped with a spacious observation platform, we await their arrival in silent anticipation, with the opportunity for up-close observation and photography Despite the challenge of remaining still, the chance to witness these elusive creatures in their natural habitat is a reward in itself. As we wait, some may choose to rest, while others eagerly anticipate the Tapirs' appearance, a testament to the allure of experiencing nature's wonders firsthand. (B,L,D)

We depart from the lodge at dawn for a two-and-a-half-hour boat journey downstream to Colorado Village. Breakfast is served either at the lodge or on the boat, offering prime wildlife spotting opportunities along the river. En route, we pass lowland settlements and witness gold mining activities along the Madre de Dios River. After a brief stop in Colorado, we embark on a 45-minute overland journey to Puerto Carlos, followed by a 10-minute boat trip across the Inambari River to Santa Rosa. Finally, a van or bus transports us to Puerto Maldonado City airport, marking the end of our unforgettable jungle adventure. (B)
